Outdoor Kitchen Planning Guide: What to Consider Before You Build
An outdoor kitchen is one of the best investments you can make in your Central Florida home. With year-round warm weather, Orlando homeowners get more use out of their outdoor kitchens than almost anywhere else in the country. But a successful outdoor kitchen requires planning — the right layout, the right materials, and the right builder make the difference between a space you love and an expensive headache.

Location and Layout
Where you place your outdoor kitchen matters more than you might think. Consider proximity to your indoor kitchen (for carrying food and supplies), prevailing wind direction (you don't want smoke blowing into your house or seating area), and access to utilities like gas, water, and electricity.
For layout, think about how you cook and entertain. A straight-line (I-shape) layout works for smaller patios and simple setups. An L-shape adds counter space and creates a natural serving area. A U-shape provides the most workspace and storage, and works well for serious home cooks who entertain frequently. Island layouts with bar seating are popular in Orlando for pool deck entertaining.
Choosing the Right Materials
This is where most outdoor kitchen projects succeed or fail in Florida. The material you choose for your cabinetry must handle daily UV exposure, humidity levels between 70% and 90%, torrential afternoon rain, and occasional tropical storms. Wood — even marine-grade plywood — will deteriorate within a few years in these conditions.

Make sure to choose appliances rated for outdoor use. Indoor appliances will fail quickly when exposed to the elements, and using them outdoors may void warranties and create safety risks.
Plumbing, Gas, and Electrical
If your outdoor kitchen includes a sink, gas grill, or powered appliances, you'll need utility connections. Plan these early — running gas lines, water supply, drainage, and electrical circuits after the kitchen is built is expensive and disruptive. In Orange and Seminole counties, some of this work requires permits and licensed contractors.
